The short answer
A university student in Pakistan needs about twelve stationery items: one good notebook per subject, a reliable ballpoint and a set of gel pens, highlighters, sticky notes, a planner, a ring binder, a desk organiser, a backpack with a laptop sleeve, a scientific calculator for STEM courses, and a stapler. Budget Rs. 8,000–12,000 for a full year.
Key takeaways
- One bound notebook per subject beats loose copies; you will actually revise from it.
- Buy a planner in August and use it for deadlines only. Calendars on phones are for meetings.
- Three highlighter colours, used consistently (definition, example, exam-likely), are worth more than six used at random.
- Spend on the backpack and the pen. Save on everything else.
The core twelve
- Notebooks, one per subject. A5 or A4 hardback, ruled or dotted. The Moleskine Classic A5 is the one that lasts a full semester without losing pages.
- A ballpoint you trust. Exams are not the time to discover your pen skips. The Parker Jotter refills for years.
- Gel pens for notes. Pilot G-2 (pack of 5): smooth, dark, no smudge on lawn-weight paper.
- Highlighters. Faber-Castell (6). Assign meanings and keep them.
- Sticky notes. Post-it cube for flagging textbook pages you cannot write on.
- A planner. The 2026 Daily Planner for assignment deadlines and quiz dates.
- A ring binder with dividers for handouts and past papers, one per semester.
- A desk organiser. The Bamboo Desk Organizer stops the desk from eating pens.
- A backpack with a laptop sleeve. The Ergonomic School Backpack 18L fits a 13-inch laptop and a binder.
- A scientific calculator for engineering, economics and sciences: the 240-function model.
- A stapler and a hole punch. Cheap, and the difference between a submitted assignment and a lost one.
- A journal for ideas outside coursework. The A5 Vegan Leather Journal.
What to skip
Multi-colour pens (you will use one colour), expensive fountain pens for lectures (they bleed on cheap handout paper), and any "study kit" bundle: they are padded with items you will not use.
A note-taking system that works with this kit
Write lecture notes in the subject notebook, in one colour. Within 24 hours, highlight: yellow for definitions, green for examples, pink for "will be on the exam". Move anything you do not understand onto a sticky note on the inside cover; that is your office-hours list. At the end of each week, write a one-page summary in the back of the notebook. By exam week you revise from the summaries and the pink highlights, not from 200 pages of notes.
