How to Wash and Care for School Uniforms So They Last All Year
Keep white shirts white, grey trousers creased and blazers uncrumpled: the washing, ironing, stain and storage routine that makes a Pakistani school uniform last a full year.

The short answer
Wash school uniforms in cold water, whites separately, with no fabric softener. Treat ink and food stains before washing, iron trousers inside out to avoid shine, and hang blazers on a shaped hanger. Done consistently, a poly-cotton shirt stays white for a full year and trousers hold their crease with one iron a week.
Key takeaways
- Cold wash, whites alone, no softener. Softener is what makes collars grey.
- Ink: rubbing alcohol on the back of the stain before washing. Never hot water.
- Iron trousers inside out; never iron a blazer directly, steam it.
- Label everything the day it arrives.
Washing
Whites separately, always. One navy sock in a white wash is a grey shirt for the rest of the year. Wash white shirts and shalwar kameez with towels or nothing else.
Cold or 30 °C. Hot water sets stains and shrinks anything with cotton in it. Poly-cotton and poly-viscose are designed for cool washes.
No fabric softener. Softener coats fibres, traps sweat and odour, and dulls whites. If shirts feel stiff, add half a cup of white vinegar to the rinse instead.
Turn trousers and pinafores inside out to protect the surface from rubbing and pilling. Fasten zips and buttons before washing so they do not catch.
Knitwear by hand or on a wool cycle, flat to dry. A cardigan in a hot wash comes out sized for a toddler.
Stains, by type
| Stain | What to do (before washing) |
|---|---|
| Ballpoint ink | Dab rubbing alcohol or hand sanitiser on the back of the stain, blot, repeat |
| Marker | Same as ink; if it is permanent marker, it is permanent |
| Curry / oil | Dish soap rubbed in, leave 15 minutes |
| Grass | Cold water and a paste of washing powder, leave 30 minutes |
| Mud | Let it dry completely, brush off, then wash |
| Blood | Cold water only, then salt paste |
| Collar grey | Rub a bar of laundry soap into the collar, leave 20 minutes |
Never put a stained item through a hot dryer or an iron; heat fixes what is left.
Drying
Hang shirts on a hanger straight out of the machine and most creases fall out. Trousers by the hem, upside down, so the waist weight pulls the leg straight. Dry whites in the shade; sun bleaches, but it also yellows polyester over time.
Ironing
- Shirts: damp, medium heat, collar first, then cuffs, then body.
- Trousers and pinafores: inside out, medium heat, with a damp cloth between iron and fabric to prevent shine. Once a week is enough for poly-viscose.
- Blazers: never iron directly. Steam, or hang in the bathroom during a hot shower. Store on a shaped hanger, not a wire one.
- Ties: do not iron; steam or leave hanging.
Repairs and replacements
Sew loose buttons the day you notice them; a missing button is a missing shirt on a Monday morning. Let trouser hems down in January (ours carry a 3 cm allowance). Replace socks every term and shoes when the sole wears smooth, not when they look old.
Labels and lost property
Lost-property boxes fill with blazers, cardigans, PE kits and water bottles. A set of iron-on name labels applied the day the uniform arrives brings almost all of it back. Put one inside the collar, one inside the waistband, one on each PE piece.

Frequently asked questions
How do I keep white school shirts white?
Wash whites separately in cold water without fabric softener, rub laundry soap into the collar before washing, and dry in the shade. Add half a cup of white vinegar to the rinse for stiffness or odour.
How do I get ink out of a school uniform?
Dab rubbing alcohol or hand sanitiser on the reverse of the stain, blot with a clean cloth, repeat, then wash cold. Do not use hot water or an iron until the stain is gone.
Can school trousers go in the dryer?
Better not. Hang them by the hem to dry; a dryer sets creases in the wrong places and wears poly-viscose faster.
How often should a school uniform be washed?
Shirts after every wear; trousers, pinafores and cardigans after two or three wears unless stained; blazers only when needed, and aired between wears.
